More and more parents are turning their backs on the traditional nine-to-five work routine in the digital age. Parents want to spend less time commuting to a job and more time with their families. But making money is still a necessity, and there are ways to bring in some much needed cash without leaving home.

Become a Tutor

Becoming a tutor is one option if you have an affinity for teaching. Find students in your area who need help improving their grades, either by going to the school or by posting an ad in the local newspaper or online. You’ll have to do some research to find out what tutors charge in your area and put together a resume reflecting your background and subjects of expertise.

Another option is to join an online tutoring website like Tutor.com. Tutoring is done by computer and the hourly rate is determined by the subject taught. You’ll have to pass an exam for each subject you want to teach. Subjects that are in most demand as of 2016 include higher math, the sciences and foreign languages such as German, French and Italian.

Get Into Blogging

WordPress.org is one of the easiest blog-building sites to use, and it gives you the option of having a free or paid website. The words “Word Press” are part of the URL on free sites. That’s OK for personal use, but it’s best to have paid hosting if you want to make money, particularly if you want to sign up with Google AdSense, which allows you to put ads on your blog. You’ll receive payment when someone clicks on the ad or when a customer makes a purchase, depending on the ad. It takes quite a lot of work to get the website and ads set up properly, but customers surf the web 24/7 so your ads can bring in money around the clock. Other domain and hosting options include GoDaddy.com and HostGator.com.

If you do decide to start a blog, you’ll also want to set up social media accounts on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook. This will help establish a following for your website and let fans know when you’ve posted something new.

Sell Your Photos

Contribute to websites such as Shutterstock.com or iStockPhoto.com if you’re into photography — either shooting images or videos. Get paid royalties when your work sells. Royalties are a percentage of the sales price that’s paid to the photographer or artist. As of 2016, Shutterstock is looking for various types of video footage and still shots, especially location shots and vector images. The latter can be shots with textured backgrounds, pictures of iconic items or illustrations. Firms like Shutterstock and iStock, run by Getty Images, are worldwide, so you can make money no matter what time zone you are in.

Try Freelance Writing or Editing

The world of freelance writing and editing is competitive and it can take a while to build up a client base. Private clients — those you seek out yourself or who miraculously find you — are the bread and butter of the industry. Websites like Freelance Writing often post jobs and submission requests from places like Craig’s List, as well as writing brokers such as Upwork.com or Guru.com. Online writing websites like WritersDomain.net and WriterAccess.com offer writing jobs to their communities of writers. Both firms require that you apply, submit writing samples and take grammar or other tests. The pay can be on the low side at first, and competing for work is challenging. As you write more articles and improve your ratings, you should start seeing better pay. The workload varies on each site, so sign up for several – you’ll have a better chance of staying busy.
